Town of Brookfield water: what Sanitary District No. 4 means for a softener

Brookfield is a city and a town, and their water does not come from the same system. If your address is in the Town of Brookfield, the city’s figures and the city’s guidance are not the ones to use.

Two Brookfields, two water systems

The City of Brookfield Water Utility supplies the city from its own municipal wells. The Town of Brookfield is served by Sanitary District No. 4, which runs a separate system and publishes its own hardness. The two are run separately and publish separately, so a Town home should never be quoted from the city’s numbers.

Mail for both can carry a Brookfield address, so the envelope does not settle it. The water bill does: it names the utility that serves the house.

The district’s figure: 32 to 35 grains

Sanitary District No. 4 puts its water at 32 to 35 grains per gallon. That is more than three times the 10.5 grains that open the USGS very hard band.

Set beside the city’s published 23 to 34, the district’s range starts higher and ends a grain above the city’s top figure.

The 23-grain setting belongs to the city

The City of Brookfield’s chloride-reduction guidance tells city residents to set softeners to 23 grains. That number was written for city water, and the district’s water is a different supply with its own published range.

For a Town house on district water, the starting number on a quote is the district’s 32 to 35, and the plumber’s tap test on install day gives the exact reading the softener is set to.

Town homes on private wells

A Town house drawing on its own well falls under neither published figure. A well’s hardness is known only from its own lab report, and no utility publishes it for you.

Read us the hardness line from the report, number and unit; a milligrams-per-liter result, divided by 17.1, reads in grains. Mention iron if the report lists it.

What a call from the Town covers

Give the address and say it is in the Town. If district water reaches the house, the quote starts from 32 to 35 grains; if the house has its own well, it starts from the lab report. Then come the head count and the spot where the water service enters, and the price is given on that call.

Common questions

I have a Brookfield mailing address. Am I a city or a town resident?

Check who sends your water bill. The City of Brookfield Water Utility serves the city; Sanitary District No. 4 serves the town.

Is Town of Brookfield water harder than city water?

By the published figures, the district’s 32 to 35 grains starts above the city’s 23 to 34 and ends one grain past it. Both are very hard.
